The third most used word is yeah, as in, “Baby, I love you, oh yeah, yeah, yeah.” No, there isn’t a lot of depth to this popular picture of love. But the fact is, we humans are obsessed with love—or at least with the idea of love.

So is God.

But His love is the real thing. When the Bible says, “God is love” (1 John 4:16), it means that God always acts fairly and unselfishly. He does what’s right and best for those He created.

The last book of the Bible, called The Revelation, highlights God’s special message of love. It’s a message for those living during the last time period of history. The opening chapter tells us the book is a revelation of “Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood” (Revelation 1:5). God’s love led Him to send His Son to shed “His own blood” for us. When we discover the true meaning of His love and respond to it, we are “washed…from our sins.” We’re transformed and set free for a life of real joy!

The book of Revelation describes the momentous last days of earth’s history. We find that God’s love motivated Him to communicate three special messages during these last days. These messages are proclaimed by three angels flying over the earth. These angels are symbols of God’s last call, and they appear in Revelation 14:6-12.

The Messages of the Three Angels

The first angel proclaims “the everlasting gospel.” The word “gospel” means good news, as opposed to good advice. News, unlike advice, is an announcement of past events. The gospel is the good news of what Jesus has already done for us (1 Corinthians 15:1-4). He lived a pure life of self-sacrificing love. He suffered intensely because of our sins, and then he died a perfect death on our behalf.

Yet even death couldn’t stop His love, or hold Jesus in its clammy grip. He rose from the dead! This is the supreme proof of His victorious love. Anyone who sincerely chooses to believe in Jesus is assured of eternal life. The “everlasting good news” of what Jesus Christ has already finished will bring glory to God forever. We didn’t earn it, and we don’t deserve it, but He did it anyway! That’s good news!

Resting on this foundation, the first angel’s message continues. “Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment has come; and worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water.” (Revelation 14:7).

In the Bible, the word “fear” can mean terror, deep respect, or awe. Sometimes, “The fear of the LORD” simply means “to hate evil” (Proverbs 8:13). In the first angel’s message, it means to be deeply in awe of our maker, who is the just judge of all the earth. It also means to become haters of sin. And, as we behold our innocent Savior painfully dying on a cruel cross, it means to be amazed at God’s infinite love and sacrifice on our behalf.

The first angel’s message urges us to “give glory to Him.” In the Bible, glory is equivalent to God’s character or goodness (Exodus 33:18-23; 34:5-8). To give God glory is to magnify His good character. It means to make Him attractive by drawing others’ attention to His love, unselfishness, faithfulness, and truthfulness.

The first angel says we should give God glory because “the hour of His judgment has come.” This means we are living in a judgment period of history. We are being examined by a holy God whose character is both loving and righteous. The Ten Commandments are God’s standard in the judgment (Ecclesiastes 12:13,14; James 2:10-12). This law teaches us to love God supremely and our neighbor as ourselves (Matthew 22:36-40; Romans 13:10). Jesus Christ’s humble, pure, merciful, and unselfish life reflects this law of love perfectly.

The first angel’s final instruction is to “worship Him who made” all things. This creation reference draws attention to the fourth commandment about the seventh-day Sabbath (compare with Exodus 20:8-11). In an age where millions are taught that humans evolved from monkeys, God wants us to remember that He is the source of our existence. He made us. He is God. We are not. Thus, we owe Him our love and loyalty.

The second angel starts by announcing “Babylon is fallen.” The word “Babylon” signifies confusion (Genesis 11). It represents church organizations that teach confusing errors contrary to Scripture. Sometimes error is even promoted in the name of God’s love and ‘salvation by grace’! But instead of teaching true love, it teaches a watered-down version of love that is permissive of sin. Our response to the cross should be true love – which motivates us to keep God’s law of love, not break it (John 14:15; 1 John 2:4; 3:4).

The third angel’s message is an urgent warning. A just judgment is coming on those who continue to break God’s Ten Commandments—His law of love. Yes, sometimes love has to be tough. Love shakes a person awake to get them out of a burning building. Love shouts at a child to warn her away from a man luring her into a car. The third angel’s message also warns about religious systems called “the beast” and its “image.” These systems, pretending to offer a global solution during a chaotic, global crisis, will enforce rest on Sunday as their “mark” of loyalty.

But forcing people to obey is contrary to God’s character. After all, “God is love”

(1 John 4:16). Only love can inspire true obedience, not force. In addition, the Bible clearly says that “the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord” (Exodus 20:10). Sunday, “the first day of the week,” is not! Looking deeper, the Sabbath reveals that Jesus Christ is God. Jesus Himself said He is the “Lord of the Sabbath” (Matthew 12:8). The Sabbath reminds us that our maker established the Sabbath at Creation (Genesis 2:1-3). This same Creator paid the supreme price for our waywardness, crying out “It is finished!” on the cross.

Those who truly appreciate Jesus’ love choose to serve Him loyally and completely. In the conclusion of the third angel’s message, they are described as those who “keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus” (Revelation 14:12).

Believe it or not, the three angels’ messages reveal true love.

Choosing Because of Love

A teenage boy was raised in a good home. Its troubles are not unique. Nations worldwide are struggling with moral, social, environmental, and economic woes. “Make America Great Again!” has become a popular slogan expressing the hopes of millions. What does the future hold for the mightiest nation on earth? Believe it or not, that future has been foretold in advance in the God-inspired pages of the Holy Bible. The Book of Revelation predicts: “Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth, and he had two horns like a lamb and spoke like a dragon” (Revelation 13:11).

Whether you believe the Bible or not, allow me to build a reasonable case that this mysterious prediction applies to America and its future. First, what is a “beast” in Bible prophecy? We don’t need to guess, prognosticate, or speculate. The answer is clear in God’s book. In its prophecies, the term beast is a symbol for a mighty nation. The proof is in Daniel 7, a chapter that parallels Revelation 13. Both Daniel 7 and Revelation 13 refer to beasts, ten horns, a boastful mouth speaking pompous words, and intense warfare against God's people (compare Daniel 7:3-8, 21 with Revelation 13:1-7). Specifically, Daniel 7 describes four great beasts: a lion, a bear, a leopard, and a dragon-like creature. Embedded in the same chapter, an angelic interpreter confirmed: “The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom on earth” (Daniel 7:23).

So, we can nail this down: According to Daniel 7—which parallels Revelation 13—a beast in Bible prophecy isn't a computer or super-evil person, but a mighty kingdom or nation. That's what the angel said. Historically, 98% of reputable Christian Bible commentaries have interpreted Daniel's four beasts to represent the ancient nations of Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Rome. This is a fact.

Out of the Earth

But there’s more. Revelation 13:11 continues: “I saw another beast coming up out of the earth.” Thus, John saw a great nation rising into power. From where? "Out of the earth," the prophet predicted. By way of contrast, all four of the beasts in Daniel 7 “came up from the sea” (Daniel 7:3). What does “water” represent? Again, prophecy pinpoints a clear answer: multitudes of people. We know this because in a parallel prophecy another angel confirmed: “The waters which you saw, where the harlot sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations and tongues” (Revelation 17:15, italics added).

True to the facts of history, ancient Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Rome all arose from the midst of a sea of peoples in Europe and the Middle East. Not so with the beast in Revelation 13:11. It comes from the earth. Thus, Revelation 13:11 points to a great nation rising out of a sparsely inhabited area.

Like a Lamb

“I saw another beast coming up out of the earth, and he had two horns like a lamb.” (Revelation 13:11). Each word is significant. The true Lamb of God is Jesus Christ who offered His life as a sacrifice for the sins of the world (see John 1:29; 3:16). “Like a lamb” indicates that this nation would have lamblike or Christian features. A lamb is a young animal, a baby sheep. This nation would at one time be youthful and new. Significantly, its “two horns” have no crowns like the first beast described in Revelation 13:2. Crowns represent kingly power. So, in Revelation 13:11 we see a new nation, with gentle, lamblike, Christian features, rising out of a sparsely inhabited area. It is led by a crown-less government, not ruled by kings.

Are the pieces coming together yet?

Superpower

Here's the shocker: Revelation 13 also reveals that this mysterious beast with two horns like a lamb would achieve superpower status near the end of time. Then it would degenerate and, during earth’s closing moments, lead out in the global enforcement of the mark of the beast. God's Word reports: “He [the lamblike beast] causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark” (Revelation 13:16,17).

These ominous verses parallel the last part of Revelation 13:11 which describes the final, tragic act of the lamblike beast: he “spoke like a dragon.” Let’s examine it closely. The beast “causes” all to have a mark—it compels or resorts to force. “All” emphasizes its global influence. Finally, the beast’s control of buying and selling clearly indicates that the world’s economy is involved.

Putting the Pieces Together

Let's put all the pieces together:

Revelation 13:11 pinpoints the rising of a great beast.

In prophecy, a beast represents a great nation.

This nation rises out of the earth, or wilderness area.

This nation starts out young, like a baby lamb.

This nation has lamblike, Christian characteristics.

This nation has horns with no crowns—it has no kings.

This nation achieves superpower status near the close of time.

This nation influences the world's economy.

This nation finally speaks like a dragon.

This nation finally enforces the mark of the beast.

Be honest: How many nations on Planet Earth today fit all ten of these clear, unquestionable, Heaven-inspired details?

Only one.

The United States of America.

“God bless America, land that I love!” Americans sing every fourth of July. Caught in the middle of previously unimaginable stresses, children grow up too fast, face tougher times in school, and often develop harmful habits. Paul wrote:

For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. Ultimately, such measures won’t work anyway. The word “righteousness,” or “right doing,” simply means to keep the Ten Commandments, “the law of righteousness” (see Romans 9:31) without a flaw. Obviously, none of us has ever been there or done that. Instead, “all have sinned” (Romans 3:23). But the good news is that nearly two thousand years ago—in a supreme act of love—Jesus kept the Ten Commandments (see John 15:10) for us, on our behalf. As a result, He is now “THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.”

Now here’s some bad news we can’t avoid. “The wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). In other words, the divine penalty for breaking the Ten Commandments is eternal destruction. Justice requires it. There’s no escaping it. On the other hand, here’s more good news: At the end of His earthly life, “Christ died for our sins” (1 Corinthians 15:3) on a cruel cross in our behalf too, which means He can now forgive us, remove our guilt, and wash us clean!

Do you enjoy receiving gifts? First, because when He returns to earth He will dispense rewards and punishments (see Revelation 22:12), and each person’s case must be decided before Christ's return so He can “render to each one according to his deeds” (Romans 2:5-10). In multiple places the Bible reveals that before God punishes the wicked or rewards the righteous, an investigation takes place where the deeds and motives of those being judged are brought to light before the universe (see Daniel 7:9-10; Revelation 20:11-15;1 Corinthians 4:5). God wants everyone to see and trust His decision-making. David understood this clearly. When speaking to God he said, “that You may be found . . . blameless when You judge” (Psalm 51:4). Such an open investigation of the hearts of the human family will prove God blameless when He executes justice on the sinner and gives eternal life to the saint. When sin is finally destroyed forever, no one in God’s created universe will have any lingering doubts about God’s wisdom and goodness in dealing with sin, sinners, and the saved. Everyone in heaven will say, “Alleluia! Salvation and glory and honor and power belong to the Lord our God! (Note: To understand the next few paragraphs, you’ll want to refer to a Bible.) Here is a simplified overview. In Daniel chapter seven God, through symbols, foretells the rise and fall of four major world empires: Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, and Rome.10 Daniel describes four beasts representing these four kingdoms, including symbolic detail.11 Then in Daniel 7:20 the focus shifts from the fourth kingdom (Rome) to ten horns. Verse 24 shows that the ten horns represent the ten kings/kingdoms12 that arose out of the Roman Empire after its fall. The term “anti” in “antichrist” means both “against” and “instead of”;13 hence many theologians, knowing this, understood the term “antichrist” to refer to individuals or entities which the Bible describes as attempting to assume Christ’s authority. After all, the medieval church of Rome and its abuse of power is part of the dishonorable spiritual heritage of just about everyone who calls himself or herself a Christian today! And let’s face it; no one likes to air their dirty laundry. First of all, Bible prophecies reveal that before Christ’s Second Coming, the majority of Christian churches will adopt medieval Catholicism’s characteristics of false worship practices and oppression. Revelation chapter 13 paints a picture of the antichrist power, indicating that the spiritual descendants of medieval Catholicism will again hold religious and political sway on the earth. This power aligns itself with other “lamb-like” groups, including mainstream Protestant Christianity as seen in the United States (see Revelation 13:11-18). While many Protestant Christians join with this revitalized manifestation of the Roman Church, many true believers—from both the ranks of Catholicism and Protestantism—will come out from this false system of worship. These believers will receive Jesus with joy when He returns.

The second reason for revisiting Newton’s biblical discoveries: God does not approve of what many Christians (even some sincere ones) have done and taught in His name over the centuries. The answer is startling, yet simple. On every continent, in every smog-polluted city, and on every tropical island across the deep blue sea, the vast majority of earth’s teeming inhabitants are now openly, recklessly, and persistently—without fear of eternal consequences—breaking the Ten Commandments, which the Bible states were originally “written with the finger of God” (Exodus 31:18) on two tablets of solid rock. “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God,” wrote Paul in Ephesians 4:30. Yet today’s irreligious, happy-go-lucky, party-loving multitudes are doing exactly that 24-7. This is the true reason why God is withdrawing His hand.

Essentially, here are God’s Ten Commandments in plain language:

Put God first

Do not worship idols

Respect God’s name

Keep the seventh day holy

Honor your parents

Do not murder

Do not commit adultery

Do not steal

Do not lie

Do not covet (readExodus 20:3-17)

According to God’s book, breaking the Ten Commandments is sin. “Sin is lawlessness” (1 John 3:4), affirmed John. He couldn’t have been clearer. The world will end and He will return on his own terms—and the terms of His calendar are known only to Him. Yet we are not left guessing about the nearness of the end. Jesus declared that we “will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows” (Matthew 24:6-8). Natural and manmade disasters will escalate as Christ’s return approaches, but He will not come until the gospel of the kingdom is “preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come” (Matthew 24:14). Like a blaring fire alarm, daily headlines remind us of a world falling apart. Not a few people are talking about our imminent demise. But in His great mercy God delays His return because He doesn’t want to lose a single one of His children. If we don’t know the exact timing of Christ’s return, then what should we know? Jesus addressed this critical concern nearly 2,000 years ago. At His final farewell, soon after the resurrection, His awestruck disciples watched as He ascended into the clouds, disappearing from sight. Nearby stood two heavenly messengers who delivered a precious promise to the forlorn followers. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven” (Acts 1:11).

Notice that this promise is entirely consistent with Christ’s earlier statements about his return. With great force He dispelled any notions of secrecy. He warned his disciples, “If anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There!’ do not believe it. For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. . . . Therefore if they say to you, ‘Look, He is in the desert!’ do not go out; or ‘Look, He is in the inner rooms!’ do not believe it. All eyes will be riveted on this noisy climax—no need for tweets or CNN’s breaking news. These details of Christ’s return are important because 2 Thessalonians 2:9 shows that Satan himself, a dazzling being of light, will attempt to deceive the world through a false second coming. After all, what good are the facts if you’re not ready for the occasion? To understand what it means to be ready, you must first realize that the Second Coming can be good news! You do not need to fear the end of the world if you are on Christ’s side. Revelation 6:14–17 describes most people running in fear and being destroyed when Christ returns the second time because they have chosen to hate the hard truth about their sinful condition. They will be destroyed because they love comforting and unbiblical lies that tell them they will be saved in their sin. God declares, “Do I have any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? . . . I have no pleasure in the death of one who dies.” He adds, “Therefore turn and live!” (Ezekiel 18:23, 32). When the world ends and the wicked are destroyed, the Lord is simply giving them what they want. In Proverbs 8:36 God says that “he who sins against me wrongs his own soul; all those who hate me love death.”

In order to be prepared for the end of the world and the return of Christ, we must first understand our true condition. The Bible teaches that the root of all sin is selfishness. Most people think that they are good, but a sincere look into God’s word reveals the opposite. Even our acts of kindness can be done through selfish motives. What we need first is Christ’s forgiveness. This pardon can be received only by asking Jesus for it in prayer. Second, we need a new heart of selfless love. A new heart and spirit are given to us by seeking God in His word (1 Peter 1:23).

Christ longs for all to be with Him in His kingdom when He returns (2 Peter 3:9). No bird that cleaves the air, no animal that moves upon the ground, but ministers to some other life.

Joy in Giving

But turning from all lesser representations, we behold God in Jesus. Looking unto Jesus we see that it is the glory of our God to give. “I do nothing of Myself,” said Christ; “the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father.” “I do not seek My own glory,” but the glory of Him who sent Me (John 8:28; 6:57; 8:50; 7:18). In these words is set forth the great principle which is the law of life for the universe. All things Christ received from God, but He took to give. So in the heavenly courts, in His ministry for all created beings: through the beloved Son, the Father’s life flows out to all; through the Son it returns, in praise and joyous service, a tide of love, to the great Source of all. And thus through Christ the circuit of benevolence is complete, representing the character of the great Giver, the law of life.

In heaven itself this law was broken. Sin originated in self-seeking. Lucifer, the covering cherub, desired to be first in heaven. He sought to gain control of heavenly beings, to draw them away from their Creator, and to win their homage to himself. Therefore he misrepresented God, attributing to Him the desire for self-exaltation. With his own evil characteristics he sought to invest the loving Creator. Thus he deceived angels. Thus he deceived men. He led them to doubt the word of God, and to distrust His goodness. Because God is a God of justice and terrible majesty, Satan caused them to look upon Him as severe and unforgiving. Thus he drew men to join him in rebellion against God, and the night of woe settled down upon the world.

The earth was dark through misapprehension of God. That the gloomy shadows might be lightened, that the world might be brought back to God, Satan’s deceptive power was to be broken. This could not be done by force. The exercise of force is contrary to the principles of God’s government; He desires only the service of love; and love cannot be commanded; it cannot be won by force or authority. Only by love is love awakened. To know God is to love Him; His character must be manifested in contrast to the character of Satan. This work only one Being in all the universe could do. Only He who knew the height and depth of the love of God could make it known. Upon the world’s dark night the Sun of Righteousness must rise, “with healing in His wings” (Malachi 4:2).

The Greatest of All Gifts

The plan for our redemption was not an afterthought, a plan formulated after the fall of Adam. It was a revelation of “the mystery kept secret since the world began” (Romans 16:25). It was an unfolding of the principles that from eternal ages have been the foundation of God’s throne. From the beginning, God and Christ knew of the apostasy of Satan, and of the fall of man through the deceptive power of the apostate. God did not ordain that sin should exist, but He foresaw its existence, and made provision to meet the terrible emergency. So great was His love for the world, that He covenanted to give His only-begotten Son, “that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

This was a voluntary sacrifice. Jesus might have remained at the Father’s side. He might have retained the glory of heaven, and the homage of the angels. But He chose to give back the scepter into the Father’s hands, and to step down from the throne of the universe, that He might bring light to the benighted, and life to the perishing.

By His life and His death, Christ has achieved even more than recovery from the ruin wrought through sin. It was Satan’s purpose to bring about an eternal separation between God and man; but in Christ we become more closely united to God than if we had never fallen. In taking our nature, the Savior has bound Himself to humanity by a tie that is never to be broken. Through the eternal ages He is linked with us. “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son” (John 3:16).

The work of redemption will be complete. In the place where sin abounded, God’s grace abounds much more. The earth itself, the very field that Satan claims as his, is to be not only ransomed but exalted. Our little world, under the curse of sin the one dark blot in His glorious creation, will be honored above all other worlds in the universe of God. Here, where the Son of God tabernacled in humanity; where the King of glory lived and suffered and died—here, when He shall make all things new, the tabernacle of God shall be with men, “and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself shall be with them, and be their God” (Revelation 21:3). And through endless ages as the redeemed walk in the light of the Lord, they will praise Him for His unspeakable Gift—Immanuel, “God with us” (Matthew 1:23).

Content taken from the book The Desire of Ages.

Scripture taken from the New King James Version®. Copyright © 1982 by Thomas Nelson, Inc.
